The Hannover region, which has approximately 1.1 million residents, is part of the metropolitan area that includes the cities of Hannover, Braunschweig, Göttingen, and Wolfsburg. Its population of approximately 526,000 residents (as of December 31, 2011) puts Hannover among the 15 largest cities in Germany.
Located on the Leine River, the city is known around the world for the Hannover Messe, which has been held here since 1947, as well as the CeBIT trade fair. Important north/south and east/west railway and road connections (A7/A2) intersect here.
The Ellenriede city forest, Maschsee lake, the zoo, and the Herrenhausen Gardens in the Baroque style make Hannover one of the “greenest” cities in Germany.
